Thousands of drivers in London who have been slapped with an additional 1.3% on parking for paying by credit card could heave a sigh of relief as the fees have now been declared illegal by the Parking and Traffic Appeals Service (Patas).

Camden, Harrow and Merton councils have been charging 1.3% extra for parking tickets paid by credit card until London General Transport Services Limited challenged the extra charges as unfair. Camden council is preparing to make an appeal against the ruling but if they are unsuccessful, every 1.3% charge on parking ticket by credit card could be refunded. In the meantime, the extra fee charge on credit card payments for parking has been stopped by Camden.

The charges are unfair because drivers do not have a choice other than paying by credit card. So to charge extra or give fines for non payment is clearly unfair.
