Nationwide has started charging customers who use its credit and debit cards outside of the UK. Customers are being charged 0.84% for every operation outside continental Europe.

The fees will be raised to 1% from July 2009. However, the fees do not include Nationwide commission – one of the few card companies not charging extra fees for the use of its cards overseas.

How prepared are Nationwide Customers for the change?

Nationwide has been sending out information to its card users about the change in policy.

The company says that the change in policy to pass on the 0.84% fee charged them by visa to Nationwide customers was necessary to maintain the balance between competitive products and ensuring sustainability especially in the wake of the global economic downturn.

The fees, it believes would enable the company to continue to offer more benefits to its customers.
